One of the more confusing car stereo problems can be when an amplifier goes into protection mode. One minute it's working and the next minute it's not, usually with the green power LED on the amp turning to red or orange. Here's a brief troubleshooting method that will hopefully help you if your amplifiers ever go into protection.
It covers many topics including in depth car audio amplifier installation. Click here. Try to determine the cause. Amplifiers can go into protection mode for several reasons.
Amplifier Protection Mode Troubleshooting
Knowing what happened before it quit working can help determine how to fix it. Did the amp malfunction as soon as it was turned on? Did it happen after blasting for hours may be thermal overload and it needs to cool? Did it cut out after you hit a bump a wire connection may have come loose? Tear it down. Get the amp down to it's most basic state. Remove all of the speaker wiring and RCA wiring and leave only the power, ground and remote leads connected. If you still have a problem in this state then either your amp is defective or you may have an installation problem such as the amplifier danielle cohn age 2020 metal.
Remember that an amplifier should only be connected to the vehicle through the power and ground terminals. Mounting the amplifier to the metal of the vehicle, including putting the mounting screws into metal, can cause problems for your amplifier.
Always mount the amplifier to a non-conductive surface. An easy way to accomplish this is to mount the amplifier to a wood board and then mount the board to the vehicle. Don't let the amp touch the screws used to moun the wood board and don't use screws so long to mount the amp that they go through the board and touch the vehicle. If the amp is OK in this torn down state start reconnecting wires until you find what causes the problem. Add the RCA cables first. Then add the speaker wires one at a time.
If the speaker wires cause the problem then they are probably touching metal. Check to make sure that a speaker wire isn't being pinched somewhere between the amp and the speaker. Also check that the speaker wire or speaker terminals aren't touching the vehicle metal near the speaker opening.Discussion in ' Victory Cross Country ' started by mjj65Apr 5, Log in or Sign up.
Victory Motorcycles: Motorcycle Forums. Apr 5, 1. Has anyone installed the R. It seemed like it should be fairly straight forward - we cut the speaker wires and wired them into the input connections and into the output connections, we have good power at the amp - blue power light is on, good ground, but I have no sound. At first I thought there was a problem with the amp so I sent it back but I'm not having any luck with the replacement amp either.
The stereo is on, it shows volume going up and down but no sound. I am not using the remote wire as suggested by the folks at R. I have checked the wires over and over to make sure we have the right colors going to the right places. Any suggestions? Is this too much amp for these speakers- could that be the problem?
Thanks, mark. Remove Advertisement. Apr 5, 2. Did you turn up the gain? Small white dial on end of amp says "gain", turn it up to around 5 or 6. Apr 5, 3. Checked all the wiring according to the victory manual diagram and all is right.
I did notice that the speaker wires for the left rear speaker are different colors than what is indicated on the diagram. I tied into the wires that were color coded according to the diagram.
I checked and we have continuity there so I am assuming that the short wires from the trunk to that speaker are different colors than the actual rear speakers coming from the stereo to that speaker. I also notice that in the manual where it shows the fairing wiring, it shows a fuse coming right off the top left corner of the stereo. There is no fuse anywhere near there on mine. The stereo display shows power, the amp shows power, we have ground?
Is there anything that would mute the sound that could have happened by resetting the stereo controls when I disconected the battery? The display shows the external speakers ON. Apr 6, 4. Without seeing a pic of how you have the wires hooked up it will be hard to tell.
My initial guess would be that you have the inputs and outputs on the amp reversed? You could also have a bad tap on wires - if you used wire taps instead of cut and solder. You should have sound even if your gains are at zero. These areas are widgets and can be controlled through the admin page. Rockford Fosgate Amp Search for:.

Sounds like a loose power connection. Whether it be the remote, the power, or the ground. I'd start there. It is usually associated with a bad ground or power connection.
For both vehicles ive worked on, i just had to relocate the ground to a harder surface such as a strut tower bolt or the frame if you can get to it. If its not that then make sure you do not have any paint on the ground area. If THAT doesnt help then check all your positive wire connections.
I would give a little tug on the connections and see if they are loose at all. Ive also seen it where you can have a single strand of wire is not shorting out such as your positive terminal touching the ground. Either way i will guarantee you that it is either high resistance in the power wire or a loose connection somewhere.
Ive had this happen so many times so if you need any help with it hit me up and ill get back to you asap. You can post now and register later. Imagine if our amps could talk- there would be a lot less incidents of blown speakers and mismatched impedances! While no one- even the most experienced guitar techs- can immediately determine exactly what caused an amplifier to fail without taking a look under the hood, some units do give off warning signs that there is something wrong to prevent that costly replacement or trip to the repair shop.
Today, we are going to discuss an overlooked, unsung hero of your amp- the protect light. An amplifier with a built-in protection circuit will have a protect light. It may be the same light as the jewel light, or a separate light altogether. When you power on a BX, the jewel light will turn red as it boots up, and then transition to solid blue when the amp is ready to rock- this is what will happen most of the time.
However, there are a few circumstances that will cause the light to turn a solid red and stay that way, which indicates that the unit is going into protection mode.
One of the most common causes is an impedance mismatch - that is, the BX is loaded below its minimum impedance rating for more on this topic, check out this article. Immediately power off your amplifier and check the impedance rating of the cabinets you are using. Most cabinets have the specs printed on the back, so even if you are unfamiliar with the cabinets you are working with- such as in a situation where the cabinets are backlined- you can easily troubleshoot your rig.
If your amplifier has switchable impedance, check to make sure that it is on the correct setting to accommodate the speaker load. Another thing that may cause the red protect light to stay on is shorted or faulty speaker outputs. While troubleshooting an amplifier in protection mode, make sure that the mute switch is not turned on, as this will also cause the jewel light to remain a solid red.
The BX and many other amplifiers use the same solid red light to indicate both that the signal is muted and that the amp is in protection mode. If your unit goes into protection mode, it is a good and bad thing- good that further damage is being prevented, but bad in that it may delay the gig.
Knowing the possible problems that a protect light indicates is essential. If that red light comes on, stay calm, power off your amp, and check your speaker connections and impedance ratings, making any necessary adjustments. After ten seconds of being powered off, the amp is reset, so turn it on and watch for the protection light again. An amp with a protect light can be a real gig saver. Let us know in the comments! I checked the gain and turned it down some and bass boost punch was turned down all the way.
But still goes into protection mode when volume raised. A technician who fixed the amp previously said he could fix it when the parts were delivered from Carvin, but the parts never arrived.
Send it on out. I was extremely happy with the PB and was willing to spend the money to have it fixed. I set up for a nighttime gig about 3pm once and then left the venue to grab some grub before going on.
Everything was working when I left, but when I returned the protection light on my Carvin PA system came on as soon as I powered it up. I found that someone had stepped on the stage monitor speaker wire right near where it plugs in and damaged the cord end.
It was an easy fix by just replacing the cord. The protection circuit saved my PA from damage. Thank you for this info. I ve been performing live for some 40 yrs. Worked as a electronic technician and thought I knew it all you could know about electronics and music gear.
Your info helps me learn new concepts and also reminds me of the old school knowledge. Thanks Carvij. Getting ready for practice I turned amp on with no sound. Seen that the protect light was on and found that the speaker cable was shorted out.
My Carvin pro-bass once went into protect mode, was a outside gig in extreme heat. My rig is rack mounted with additional items in the rack.Page of 64 Go. Quick Links. Table of Contents. Page Adjusting Gain Next, increase the amplifier gain setting until adequate volume is achieved. Rockford Fosgate source units do not distort, so the volume can be used at maximum setting.
NOTE:Best signal to noise and dynamic range are realized with the gain at minimum. Most users find adequate gain and volume is achieved at about halfway in the adjustment range.
