Changing the operating voltage of a motor is just a matter of switching a few wires around on the motor's terminal plate. By switching these wires, you change internal wiring for the run windings and the start windings from a parallel hook up for volts to a series hook up for volts. You should find the series and parallel connections on a diagram affixed to the inside of the terminal box cover.
If you cannot, a Century AC motor wiring diagram for or volts can be found online. The wires are color coded, and the terminals are numbered. Before doing anything else, turn off the circuit breaker to the motor's branch circuit at the service panel. Tape the circuit breaker in the off position, then attach a note to the service panel informing others that you are working on the circuit. Turn off the circuit breaker as a safety precaution, even if the motor has an on-off switch. Someone could accidentally flip the on-off switch on while you are working on the motor.
Remove the screws securing the terminal cover plate to the motor's rear end bell. The motor's rear end bell is the end of the motor opposite the shaft end. Loose screws have a way of disappearing, so screw them back in their holes for safe keeping. Once you have access to it, examine at the terminal board and locate the terminals marked 3 and 5.
The next steps will depend on the voltage you're switching to. Connect the "Brown" motor lead to the 3 terminal for a volt hookup and to the 5 terminal for a volt hookup. Then connect the Brown motor lead to the terminal appropriate for the line voltage being used with the motor. Next, connect the red and black circuit wires to terminals 1 and 5 for a volt connection. Alternatively, connect the "Black" and the "White" circuit wires to the 1 and 6 terminals for a volt connection.
It does not matter which circuit wire connects to which terminal. With a volt branch circuit, both wires are hot wires derived from separates phases at the service panel, one from "A"-phase, the other from "B"-phase. The "Black" wire is the "Hot" wire originating from either "A"- phase or "B"-phase at the service panel. The "White" wire is the circuit's "Neutral" or "Grounded" wire and connects to the panel's neutral bar. Once you've completed the switch, replace the terminal cover plate and turn the circuit breaker on.How three phase math works (277 + 277 = 480?)

I am always delighted to add information to this compressed air website from folks that know much more about specialty areas than I. If you have specialty information, as Terry does on changing compressor motor voltages, please add it as a comment.
Changing compressor motor voltages applies to electric motors on any compressor, not just restricted to the Speedaire brand of air compressors. I have seen several posts regarding questions concerning changing voltages on a dual voltage motor.
I wanted to comment on the individual posts, but by doing that I was unable to post a picture of wiring labels, so decided to make a new post, so I could insert some pictures to help.
This is for single phase electric wiring applications. NOT 3 phase. Finding out what your dual voltage motor is presently wired for can be a challenge. The previous owner could have modified it in many various ways, including using non-standard electrical wires and plugs, to suit a particular purpose.
I have found that most dual-voltage motors have a wiring diagram located on it somewhere. Sometimes in plain view, such as a plate or sticker mounted externally, or sometimes on a label or sticker underneath an access panel for the wires. If it does not have a label diagram for wiring changes, then it probably is not a dual-voltage motor.
Sometimes you can also have the option of motor direction thrown into the mix, for CW rotation, or CCW rotation. If a factory label is not affixed anywhere externally or hid under an access panel, then you are going to have to do some research on the motor to determine brand, model number, etc. If a label is found, I have found that determining or changing the voltages is fairly straight forward, and not hard to do.
Nor is changing the rotation direction. Simply compare the wiring diagram with your existing wiring and match the wire colors to the existing setup in your motor. Once you have determined what voltage your motor is currently set at you can move on from there, and disconnect and reattach designated wires in the diagram. After you have changed your wiring, then it becomes your turn to get appropriate plugs and receptacles to suit your needs.
Electrical Engineering Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for electronics and electrical engineering professionals, students, and enthusiasts. It only takes a minute to sign up. I am trying to understand how the different wiring is changing the way the windings get current. I would guess that wiring for high voltage the motor would use all the windings and when wiring for low voltage it would only utilize half the windings.
But, wouldn't that would give the motor different performance and draw ratings depending on how it is wired? Can someone explain how the current is traveling in both the high and low voltage wiring scenarios?
Where are the poles? Thank you! Incorrect - although you could if you only wanted half power. The answer is to connect the half-windings in parallel. Note that in your second diagram T4, T5 and T8 are connected together forming a second 'Y' or star arrangement. Then the outer terminal of each 'Y' is connected together. BUT the current in yy will be twice the current in y per phase. Sign up to join this community.

It shows the components of the circuit as simplified shapes, and the capability and signal connections amongst the devices. A wiring diagram usually gives recommendation approximately the relative tilt and contract of devices and terminals upon the devices, to help in building or servicing the device.
A pictorial diagram would affect more detail of the physical appearance, whereas a wiring diagram uses a more figurative notation to emphasize interconnections on top of swine appearance. A wiring diagram is often used to troubleshoot problems and to create positive that all the contacts have been made and that all is present.
Architectural wiring diagrams act out the approximate locations and interconnections of receptacles, lighting, and remaining electrical services in a building. Interconnecting wire routes may be shown approximately, where particular receptacles or fixtures must be on a common circuit. Wiring diagrams use within acceptable limits symbols for wiring devices, usually alternative from those used on schematic diagrams.
The electrical symbols not unaided fake where something is to be installed, but plus what type of device is monster installed. For example, a surface ceiling fresh is shown by one symbol, a recessed ceiling roomy has a substitute symbol, and a surface fluorescent fresh has another symbol.
Each type of switch has a alternating metaphor and correspondingly get the various outlets. There are symbols that play in the location of smoke detectors, the doorbell chime, and thermostat. A set of wiring diagrams may be required by the electrical inspection authority to approve connection of the quarters to the public electrical supply system.
The advantages of wiring a volt motor for volts. Application: Wiring an Electric Motor. Estimated Time: Depends on experience with electric motors. Precaution: Electric motors are best serviced by an experienced electrician or knowledgeable technician. Changes in the wiring of an electric motor should only be made after the electric motor circuit has been identified and turned OFF and Tagged. Electrical Wiring. See how electrical outlets for the home are wired. There is no wiring diagram. There are 6 leads, all the same color.
They do have numbered clip, 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 8. What is the connections to run on volts. I would suggest visiting the Google Groups page where there is some discussion about Robbins Myers motor wiring. What if I have two v motors which operate at 14amps? I cannot run them on a single 20amp circuit. However, I have a volt 4 wire circuit which can handle much more amperage.
If I was to wire one pole of each motor to the neutral and the remaining pole each to a separate hot wire Having two v powers from one circuit would that power each motor and not bust the amperage limit? Also, will there be any back-EMF effects through the neutral which is shared? Hi Timothy, Using a multi-wire 4wire circuit for two volt motors would depend on the type of motors that would be connected and the application. However, due to the amperage of the volt motors as described, and the possibility of overloading a shared neutral it would be best to install two separate circuits, one dedicated circuit for each motor.
I am replacing the unit with a volt EC motor. Can I use the existing wiring circuit use one leg to power the new equipment?
Did not want to increase customer costs with new volt circuit home run. Hi Ed, If the existing circuit is dedicated, and the amperage is within the specs of the new motor then it can be converted to be volt at the panel and at the motor connections.
However, you should understand that the volt motor will require more amperage, and this may affect the performance of the unit. In cases such as this it is best to replace the motor with one of the same specs to make sure the unit is left in OEM condition.Baldor produces a wide range of alternating current AC and direct current DC electric motors in 26 plants world-wide.
