A Grandma Prominent. Aug 4, 3 1 0. Whenever I'm calling with my friends in a Discord channel, the internal sounds of my computer YouTube sounds, SoundCloud sounds, etc are transmitted. So, they can hear what I hear, even though I'm using an earbud headset. I have tried other solutions which include right-clicking the speaker icon on the taskbar and disabling or lowering a bunch of settings.

It is brand new, right out of the box and I have not tried other calling media. I'm not that educated in computers, so please bear with me. Last edited by a moderator: Sep 20, Reactions: VinothVictory.

However, the first time I join a voice chat after a reboot, I get loud crackling anytime someone speaks. It fixes itself if I change the output of my headphones from Line Out to Headphones or vice versa headphones setting sounds better to me. I initially thought it was the Line Out setting being the issue, so I changed it using this as a guide.

That did not fix it and no matter which one I set as default, the crackling returns equally as bad in Discord until I change it. After that, either port sounds just fine.

I'm trying to figure out how I can have it sound good without having to flip the setting in PulseAudio, but I'm clueless. All other audio seems fine.

Even in games like CSGO there isn't this problem with voice chat, and I'm able to play other games, watch video, and listen to spotify just fine. It only seems to be affecting discord. If it matters, the exact settings are "Line Out plugged in " and "Headphones unplugged " although despite the forum in the link above, I was able to set the Headphones as default anyway and it recognizes that port. I'm using the PulseAudio Volume Control pavucontrol app from Ubuntu Software to change these settings, and the terminal to set the default port.

My only connected audio devices are my headphones for output, plugged into the motherboard port; my mixer and headphones are listed in input headphone mic mutedboth also plugged into the motherboard.

Mixer is a USB interface. My webcam was listed at one point, but I'm not sure where it has gone and if that can affect things somehow. I had a similar issue with Skyrim on Linux via. Steam Play. I tried all kinds of stuff; these were the only things that actually worked, so they must be important. I also had some kind of popping, crackling, or distortion of the audio after I got music and voices working.

This is what worked for me:. This issue is due to incorrect buffer sizes. If the issue is still present, try setting them to the following values:. Setting the PCM volume above 0 dB can cause clipping.Multiplayer Games are getting more popular each day.

Your problem will get resolve permanently. This is the easiest solution that you will try.Hard drives are usually nearly silent but some do make a muted clicking sound when they're being accessed or turned off—this is normal.

On the other hand, if you start hearing noises only occasionally or noises that you've never heard before—like clicking, grinding, vibrations, or squealing—your hard drive may be failing. Datacent offers some sample sounds of failing hard drives that might sound like what you're hearing.

The steps below will help you determine if it's really the hard drive that's at fault and if it is, what to do next before all of your precious data is gone for good. Verify the hard drive is the source of the noise and not a different hardware component.

For example, if you unplug the power and data cables from the hard drive but you still hear the noise when you boot up the computer, it's clear that the problem is not with the hard drive. Try every scenario to really pinpoint the source. If the noise is gone when the power cable is plugged in but returns when you attach the data cable to the hard drive, then you probably need to replace the data cable. See our guide on How to Open a Desktop Computer Case if you're not sure how to get into your computer.

If you're certain the hard drive itself is at fault, run free hard drive diagnostic softwarealready available on many computers or available on the internet. The more advanced diagnostic software is also available for a cost from various developers. When running diagnostics softwareit's best to close down all other programs and unplug any other drives or devices that you aren't testing so that the results won't be skewed.

At best, the diagnostic software will only mark the areas of the hard drive that are failing as "bad" and prevent the computer from using them in the future. It won't truly fix a hard drive that's physically failing. If any corrections made by the diagnostics software don't temporarily solve the hard drive noise, perform a backup of your system and replace the hard drive. If the diagnostics software helps fix the clicking, grinding, or squealing noises, this fix offers a temporary solution.

Chances are, the hard drive will continue to fail until it's completely unusable. However, on rare occasions when a hard drive is noisy only when you access certain data on your drive, it could be those specific sectors that are at fault—a problem that some diagnostics software can repair. Since there's no good way to repair a failing hard drive, protecting your data by performing regular backups is essential.

With an up-to-date backup, recovering from a hard drive failure is as simple as installing a new drive and restoring your data. The best way to back up your data is with an online backup service because your files are kept in the cloud and less susceptible to being lost or destroyed.

However, a faster method is to use a free backup program —some of these programs can even clone the files from the failing hard drive and put them on a new, working hard drive. Solid-state drives SSDs don't have moving parts like a magnetic hard drive, so you won't hear one failing like you can with a spinning hard drive.

External hard drives make noises, too. These noises arise when the drive connects to the computer because of a power- or cable-connection problem. Try fixing noises from an external hard drive by plugging the power adapter directly into the wall instead of a power strip, using a shorter USB cable, using USB 2.

A fragmented hard drive generates additional drive activitiy. Use a free defragmenting program to help extend the life of your hard drive, but it probably won't fix the problem in most noisy hard drives.

Although it isn't common, it is possible that a hard drive noise is due to a faulty device driver. See How to Update Drivers in Windows to learn how to update a hard drive driver. The hard drive isn't the only component in a computer. You also have a power supplyfan, disc driveand other things that might be making noise. It's important to recognize where the noise is coming from so that you can understand what needs to be looked at.

For example, if your computer is working in overdrive for a specific task, like a memory-hogging video game, it's normal to hear the fan running faster to keep the hardware cool. There might instead be something stuck in the blades of the fan that's causing a strange noise—like, for example, animal hair. When you open a certain program or window on your computer, you might hear a noise increasingly becoming louder—one that's easy to mistake for a hard drive noise.

This most likely means there's a disc in the disc drive that's spinning faster than it previously was so that the computer can read data from it, which is normal.

Popping or static noises from the speakers might also be mistaken for hard drive noises the cable might not be firmly attached to the computer plugas might some BIOS beep codes and high-pitched whines. Was this page useful? With over million usersthe 5-year-old, easy to use voice chat service has taken the gaming world by storm. No matter what game you play, from Call of Duty to World of Warcraft, you have probably come across Discord. Today, in the age of the mechanical keyboard, keeping your comms clear and noise free while furiously spamming hotkeys is harder than ever. The last thing you or your friends want during a gaming session is someone drowning out the voice chat with their mechanical keyboard.

Compared to most mainstream keyboards that use a plastic membrane, these switches give mechanical keyboards a unique tactical feedback while typing. While they may feel great to type with, the trade-off is extra noise.

If you are looking to make the switch to a mechanical keyboard and want to be noise conscious consider purchasing one with a quieter switch type.

If you are interested in hearing the different switches for yourself, check out this short sound comparison video. Installation is a manual process here is a more in-depth guidethat requires you to remove all of your keycaps, install the O-rings, then replace all keycaps. Setting up your microphone optimally can make a huge impact reducing noise.

Every microphone has a property known as directionality. This indicates from which direction and angle the microphone best picks up sound. Some microphones even include controls on them that let you change the directionality. If your microphone is unidirectional or cardioid picks up sound more from one direction positioning can help. You want to position the microphone so that it faces towards you, while your keyboard and mouse are behind it.

Most manufacturers will disclose that information. Headset microphones by virtue of being closer to your mouth, typically pick up less keyboard noise. If you are buying a new microphone, and it's the main purpose is voice chat while gaming, consider picking up a headset. One downside is, that they can be more susceptible to breathing and plosives noises. Not in front of your mouth or nose.

The microphone will still be able to hear you clearly, but avoid any plosive distortion from breathing. By default, Discord tries to automatically determine the sound input level needed to activate your microphone. Most of the time, this works great, but with a loud keyboard in the mix, manual tuning can do a better job. Getting a perfect balance can be tricky, and if you are struggling try the suggestions below instead.
